In cursul unor actiuni care au avut ca scop combaterea si prevenirea terorismului si radicalismului islamic seful guvernului australian si-a facut publice punctele de vedere cu privire la drepturile emigrantilor in Australia. Consecintele acestor declaratii: Howard a pierdut alegerile in favoarea candidatului "Partidului Muncii" .
